AN INDEPENDENT FIELD GUIDE

Look closer.
Follow the story.

Untypical is for people who stop to look. At the wrong-shaped building. The door that goes nowhere. The place that outlived its original purpose.

The world is full of things
we haven’t learned to notice.

Start with something real.

Every story begins with an actual place and something you can see. We use documented photographs, explain where they came from, and distinguish observation from historical fact.

Leave with a little more.

A photograph can catch your attention. A good explanation gives you a new way to look. We connect the visible detail to the people, purposes and changes behind it.

You don’t have to go.

These stories are made to be explored wherever you are. Reading journeys connect ideas; they aren’t promises of public access or ready-made travel itineraries.

How we work

Untypical is an independent editorial project. Our first edition brings together short visual discoveries, place stories and selected interactive photo studies. The byline “Untypical” identifies the project’s editorial compilation; it does not imply that we visited or photographed the location.

Sources are linked at the end of each story. Photograph credits include the creator, source and available capture date. A recent publication date does not make an older photograph current. When the present condition of a place is unconfirmed, we say so.

Four ways in

Hidden in Plain Sight looks for overlooked urban details. Left Behind follows the traces of a former life. Second Lives explores what places become. Beautifully Strange asks why the built world sometimes looks so unexpected.
